Cartago
As the first Spanish settlement in Costa Rica, Cartago and the region has an interesting history and fascinating ruins dating back to the 16th century. The settlers moved to this region to avoid the hot tropical climate of the coasts and its inhabiting pirates. Irazú Volcano’s constant threat gave them another reason to move.
The region is also well known by Costa Ricans as the home of their Catholic Patron: the Virgen de los Ángeles or Black Madonna, thousands make yearly pilgrimages to visit her and show their appreciation for granted miracles and show their undying faith. Also the highest peak in all of Central America, at 12,532 feet above sea level, Cerro Chirripó, is a close drive away from the city and offers a highly challenging climbing experience for avid hikers and adventurers.
