July is part of the rainy season...on the Pacific coast rain falls are in the afternoon or evening and the Caribbean side gets heavy rain especially in the north. There is usually a short mid-year mini-dry season at the end of July and beginning of August for three or four weeks especially in the northern Pacific region.

  • Nesting Period Olive Ridley Sea Turtle

The Olive Ridley Turtle, also known as the Pacific Ridley is one of the smallest  sea turtle, eventhough it can weigh as much as 45 kg (100 lbs) and have a length of up to 75 cm (30 in). It is named for the olive-green color of its heart-shaped shell.
- Location: Pacific coast
- Hatching: 50 to 60 days
- Nesting Period: Close to a moon season


  • Nesting Period Leatherback turtles

Leatherback sea turtles are the largest living marine reptiles and live almost their entire lives at sea. The only times that they are on land is when the female turtles lay eggs, and when hatchlings emerge from the nest and make their way to ocean.
- Location: Tortuguero National Park

- Hatching: 50 to 70 days
- Nesting Period: April to November


  • Nesting Period Green Sea Turtle

Green turtles are the largest of all the hard-shelled sea turtles. They are one of the few species so ancient that they watched the dinosaurs evolve and become extinct.
- Location: Tortuguero National Park

- Hatching:50 to 55 days
- Nesting Period: June to September 


  • Nesting Period Loggerhead Sea Turtles

Loggerhead Sea Turtles get their name for their exceptionally large head with heavy strong jaws. They grow up to 2.5 to 3.5 feet in carapace length (73-107 cm) and an adult can weight up to 350 pounds (159 kg).
- Location: Tortuguero National Park
- Hatching:50 to 70 days
- Nesting Period: May to August  


  • Nesting Period Hawsbill Sea Turtles

The hawksbill turtle is small to medium-sized compared to other sea turtle species. Adults weigh 100-150 lbs (45 to 68 kg) on average, but can grow as large as 200 lbs (91 kg).
- Location: Atlantic (Tortuguero National Park) & Pacific (Playa Ostional, Playa Grande, Osa Peninsula)

- Hatching: 50 to 60 days
- Nesting Period: May to October


  • Día de La Virgen del mar (Virgin of the Sea Day) Saturday closest to July 16th

Celebrations include colorful regatta of decorated fishing boats and yachts in the Nicoya golf, carrying Puntarenas' Patron Saint, La Virgen del Monte Carmelo. Special Masses, parades, concerts, dances, sports events and fireworks.


  • Día de la Anexión de Guanacaste (Guanacaste Day) July 25th

Celebration of the annexation of the "Partido de Nicoya" in 1824, known today as the province of Guanacaste, with fiestas, folk dances, horse parades, cattle shows, bullfights, and concerts.


  • Humpback whales

The humpback whale is a Baleen whale. Adults range in length from 12–16 metres (40–50 ft) and weigh approximately 36,000 kilograms (79,000 lb).
