Arenal Volcano

Perhaps the most spectacular attraction of the Northern Region is Costa Rica’s most active volcano, Arenal. With its perfect conical form and flowing red glowing lava, it is truly a quintessential volcano. It was dormant until the late 60s when, preceded by a series of earthquakes it blew unexpectedly, sending shock waves that were recorded as far away as Boulder, Colorado. The volcanic ash provides for fertile soil and lush surrounding areas, great for rainforest hikes or zip-line canopy tours. Very often the volcano is shrouded with clouds but, when you do catch a glimpse, Arenal is a truly awesome natural spectacle, periodically spitting smoke and gases.
