Sarapiquí
The major town in the San Juan - La Selva Biological corridor, home to some of Costa Rica’s most effective ecotourism businesses, is Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí. In colonial times, this town was Costa Rica’s main port, but now is the major jumping off point for adventures into the rainforests of Rara Avis, Selva Verde, The Tirimbina Wildlife Refuge and La Selva. Lodges in this region are major leaders in community education, offering training and research opportunities for local residents, scientists and conservationists alike.
