Downtown and Suburbs

Bustling downtown San José is home to many of the city’s main attractions. Some points of interest you might want to check out are the main marketplace (Mercado Central), the pedestrian walkway (Avenida Central), the main square (Plaza de la Cultura), or the theater (Teatro Nacional).  In and around downtown you’ll find plenty of places to buy souvenirs, go to high quality cultural events like the National Symphony, experience the lives of everyday Costa Ricans, go out to eat or just sit with a friend for coffee. San José is a major metropolis, the economic, political and cultural center of the country, and a growing cosmopolitan center in Latin America. It is definitely worth a visit.
